Sopa means "Welcome" in Masai language. Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is set in the Oloolaimutia valley, where the lodge totally blends in perfectly with its surrounding hillside landscape. The accent here is on the Masai tribe, and the fabulous wealth of wildlife, bird life, and natural flora to be found in the fabled Masai Mara National Reserve.
The lodge is located 240 kms from Nairobi, approximately 5 hours on tarmac and all weather murram road, situated outside the park. Flying is one hour to the nearest airstrip which is 30 minutes drive to the lodge.
There are a total of 50 traditional round buildings with thatched roofs, each with 2 rooms. There is also a honeymoon suite located on top of the property offering an uninterrupteds view of the Oloongama hills. The suite has a king size bed that is set on a platform. The bathroom in the honeymoon suite has a sunken bath and shower. A spacious verandah is in the front to watch the sunset or have privately served meals.
The Reception is airy and spacious, it is decorated in with the red coloured walls synonymous with the Masai. An effect of beads painted in bright colours is very prominent. In the centre is a huge table with slabs of stone found in the area.
The dining area has a centrally located fireplace with an extremely high chimney. Its walls are painted with pastel colours to match those of the simply exquisite, natural-stone framed paintings of everyday Maasai life, and its separated, generously sized buffet tables offer garden fresh salads; succulent main courses; live cooking areas; an extravagant choice of desserts; and a wide selection of cheeses.
The warm ambience of the Jumbo Bar with its free form, cowrie shell and bead embedded counter; its back-lit alcoholic offerings; and its overly comfortable bar chairs make it the perfect place to share an evening with family or friends both before and after dinner.
