This is a gem of a place, ideally situated for access to the city and to nature. The rooms are spacious and simply yet stylishly decorated. Your host will ensure that your stay is a comfortable one. Linen and towels are pure cotton and artisan-made chairs are scattered with brightly coloured handmade cushions. For a truly unique open air experience book the room upstairs from where hyena and lions may be heard as you fall asleep. This room also has its own verandah looking onto the park, ideal for spotting birds and other wildlife.
Paintings and other art works line the walls whilst locally made seagrass mats lie underfoot.
Not only is there a swimming pool at the lodge a few km away, but there are also 2 restaurants in close proximity. The cul-de-sac the house is set on is rough but scenic and provides the ideal site for jogging and walking. It leads to Masai Gate, an entrance to Nairobi National Park, and impala, zebra giraffe and even eland are regularly seen on the roadsides.
Kitengela Glass is a short hike or 20 minute drive away. This is not to be missed for its incredible domed furnace and the organically formed buildings and sculptures, not to mention the glassware and more creative pieces of glass/metalwork available for sale. There is a menagerie including camels, horses, ducks, geese, pigs, at least 10 dogs and counting...
The Dame Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is also nearby - about a 20 minute drive. Abandoned and orphaned elephants are taken care of here and every day at 11am you can see them being bottle-fed and hear their individual stories. The elephants reared here are released back into the wild In Tsavo East when they are old enough.
Quarry Cottage is the ideal base for exploring Nairobi and its surroundings, with easy access to Karen and its many attractions eg The Giraffe Centre, The Karen Blixen Museum, MatBronze.
Nairobi National Park (NNP), despite its relatively modest size (117sq km) is one of the world's most diverse and interesting Protected Areas. In few other conservation areas of comparable size are there so many different habitats represented, ranging from savannah grassland and open woodland and scrub to bushed thickets and upland dry forest, and from rocky gorges to wetlands and streams. This park is within the boundaries of the city of Nairobi, and the nearest gate into the park is 2 km from my door, making it a unique attraction when staying here. NNP's diversity supports lions, rhinos, buffaloes and other large wild animals of many species. The Park's exceptionally varied native flora (comprising plants of more than 500 species) supports an uncommonly diverse fauna, extending to mammals of more than 100 species, a bird list numbering more than 520 species, reptiles and amphibians of more than 60 species, and butterflies of more than 160 species. This gives the Park a level of biological diversity greater than some entire countries!
