Thayu set in almost six acres of farmland, mature flower gardens and indigenous trees, is an acclaimed Getaway located in Tigoni, just 30 minutes’ drive from the Nairobi City, off the old Limuru road. “Thayu” is the local word for peace and its very existence was inspired by the undulating hills, ever-green countryside and the serenity that you cannot help feeling when you arrive. The pleasant climate and the crisp, reinvigorating, highland air have made it a perfect sanctuary for those seeking to get away from the city.
Thayu is a place with a taste of history in its every breath. The land on which it sits has the original title in the name of King George VI. Over time it evolved with various settler owners until it changed hands to the first African owner, Doc, in 1986. He made it home for his family where they lived for many years.
The journey towards a boutique hotel began with the construction of cottages which were a labour of love, designed by Doc and his late brother Charles.
The log cabin conference facility followed where it was designed and built as a classic building made from antique wood recycled from the horse barn that dotted the landscape in the early days. The annex which kept Doc and his wife awake for many days was the next piece of the puzzle. Finally, it was all coming together!
The farm house which already existed, boasts rich colonial history and was constructed in 1948 during the second world war. It is rumoured that highly decorated colonial military soldiers used the house severally for intelligence briefings. Being a hidden gem, it was the perfect place for the soldiers to get away for tactical retreats without drawing attention to themselves. This is now a farm café where many memorable dining experiences have been had and continues to hold the promise of even better ones in future.
This mish mash of history and life events has evolved into a perfect hideaway for those who want to relax and rejuvenate while taking in the beautiful nature that Thayu exudes.
