Kiboko Nyumba (Hippo House) is the realisation of our dream to build an eco-friendly holiday home in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Finished in November 2014, it is an impressive, 4 bedroom Swahili style house that sleeps 10 people + a baby .
The villa, which is set in 1 acre of land, is spread over 3 floors and is just a 10 minute stroll from the stunning beaches of the Indian Ocean.
The property is available to rent and comes fully staffed with a chef, housekeeper and a gardener as well as a night time askari (security guard). Our friendly staff will be on hand to help make your holiday as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
The house is fully alarmed and has G4S security around the clock.
The ceiling fans in every room along with the makuti roof and open grill windows mean that you can benefit from the cooling coastal breezes without the need for power-hungry air conditioning units. There is ample space for entertaining in the open plan lounge, the relaxing top terrace, the large verandah or around the pool.
The vast 14m x 12m living space is open plan with a lounge area that includes 3 large sofas and a 52 inch plasma tv. This comes with a dvd player and dstv satellite which can be upgraded for the duration of your holiday to include the sports channels at an extra cost. The dining section has a table which seats 10 and a bar with refrigerator and water cooler.
The verandah has cushioned seating on one side and another 10 seater dining table for al fresco eating. The ground floor also has a large fully equipped kitchen, a laundry room and a store room as well as a shower and toilet.
There are 3 large en-suite bedrooms situated on the first floor all featuring handcarved wooden furniture crafted by local specialists.
The spiral staircase takes you from the first floor landing up to the makuti covered roof terrace. This impressive open space of 12m x 8m has plenty of seating and a second bar with refrigerator and water cooler. Decorated in the Swahili style this is the ideal place for relaxing with a drink or two to watch the sun go down. Leading from this is the master bedroom suite. This 6m x 8m room is furnished with a 2.4m bed and more hand made furniture. There is an adjoining dressing room and a spacious en-suite which has twin Italian designer sinks and a walk in shower.
All of the bedrooms have louvred shutters to the windows and floor to ceiling mosquito nets around the beds. The staff will prepare your rooms each night before you retire.
The 1 acre garden is enclosed by a 2 metre high wall covered with bourgainvillea and topped with an alarmed, electric fence. Inside there are a variety of tropical plants and fruit trees including paw paw, bananas and coconuts. The 8m x 10m swimming pool is surrounded by galana patio with sun loungers. Behind the pool we have a grass court ideal for playing badminton. Equipment is available from the staff. At the far end of the verandah there is a professional table tennis table and a darts board. Discretely situated at the end of the grounds is a 3 bedroomed staff house ensuring availability of assistance if needed during your holiday.
Kiboko Nyumba is located just off Turtle Bay Road which links Watamu Village and Temple Point and is situated amongst small shambas (farms). Goats and cows are regular visitors to the path at the side of the villa meaning guests are immediately immersed into local Kenyan life, however a very short drive by car or Tuk tuk
Watamu is a small coastal village situated a 20 minute drive from the town of Malindi. There are 2 small supermarkets and 3 banks as well as a miriad of local stalls and boutiques on the edge of the original fishing village. Visitors can browse the many stalls that line the road where you can find local craftsmen making souvenirs, clothing and art work.
There are a wide range of bars and restaurants in the area to suit all tastes. Some of our favourites are Pilipan (a great place for enjoying amazing seafood with an asian twist), Ocean Sports (we love the beach location at lunch time, no better way to enjoy the amazing coastal scenery) and Amandina at Medina Palms (perfect for a special occasion while on holiday).
In the heart of the village you can find Anna's and Andrea's ice cream parlour where you can enjoy some of the best handmade ice cream outside of Italy.
The Watamu Marine National Reserve, a nature park protected by the Kenya wildlife service boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In the north are the coral lagoons of Watamu Bay and Blue Lagoon. At Turtle Bay guests can take a glass bottomed boat out into the marine park to see the stunning array of marine life from Rays to Clown Fish and then can go snorkling to get a closer view. For the more adventurous there are several professionals who can take you scuba diving. At low tide you can walk out onto the reef and find Moray Eels, Lion Fish and many species of coral. Running south, 5kms of white sandy beach takes you to Kite Beach where you can kite surf and paddleboard. At certain times of the year dolphins and humpback whales are regular visitors and can be seen from the shore. Some of the best deep sea game fishing can be enjoyed from Watamu with regular catches of tuna, marlin and swordfish.
Mida Creek is a tidal inlet that covers an area of 32km². Here you can take a boat out onto the creek or walk through the mangrove forest to see more than 60 species of birds. A favourite holiday activity here is to take a cruise on a traditional dhow as the sun goes down enjoying a drink or two.
A 5 minute walk from the house is Watamu Turtle Watch. Here you can visit some of the turtles rescued from being caught in fishermen's nets. Visitors can also volunteer to take part in the protecting nest sites ensuring hatchlings can safely make it to the ocean.
North of Watamu village at Bio-Ken's Snake Farm you can view a wide collection of snakes. Venom is collected and used to make antivenom which is sent all over Africa. Guides at the centre will be able to introduce you to some of their residents and you may even get to hold them as well.
At Gede, 5kms from Watamu, there are the Gede Ruins; remains of an ancient city including 7 mosques. Nearby you can visit the Kipepeo Butterfly Project, a community scheme where they farm many species of butterflies and moths.
The Arabuko Sokoke Forest, which is the largest coastal forest in East Africa, runs from Gede to Kilifi. Here you can see many species of birds, forest elephants and is the only place in the world you can see the golden-rumped elephant shrew.
No trip to Africa is complete without a safari. Tsavo East, Kenya's largest game park, is just a 2 hours drive away while Amboseli, Taita Hills, Shimba Hills and Tsavo West are all within a day's drive.
