The property is situated on the waterfront. Si Ajabu offers an idyllic vacation on the Lamu archipelago soaking up panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. With five en suite double rooms spread across three floors with access to a roof top and swimming pool.
Lamu is an archipelago where donkeys and dhows are the main mode of transport as there are no vehicles on the island except for the odd one or two. To walk from Lamu to Shella (the third largest village on Lamu island) takes around 45mins to 1 hour tide permitting. The walkways are narrow and give a sense of old-style living and a feeling of a land which time forgot.
As part of our promise to take good care of our guests at Si Ajabu we offer:
•1 litre of purified bottled water, per person, per day
•Jacuzzi in the master en suite bedroom
•Self-catering and option, on request, for meals to be prepared by a local chef
•The property can comfortably accommodate 15 people
•Morning workout sessions (on request)
•Morning sun salutation yoga sessions (seasonal)
Shared access is available to the rooftop, swimming pool and study including a television, DVD player and movies. Exclusive access for occupants of the master bedroom to the top floor kitchen and Jacuzzi.
This is our holiday home and so we occasionally stay during school holidays, and visit to check and maintain the place from time to time. During longer stays interaction is kept to a minimum as the layout of the premises conveniently separates the private areas from shared public areas including two separate kitchens.
There are various restaurants to suit your budget located within 10 minutes walk from Si Ajabu. Alternatively, you can organise with a staff member to talk with local fishermen to place any order of fresh seafood. We also provide a chef on request for an additional, negotiable fee.
What I love most and what attracted me most as a tourist the first time I visited Lamu some 20 years ago is the friendly and laid back atmosphere. From the minute you board the ferry from mainland or from the airport there is an instant calmness which descends upon you. The absence of traffic, automobiles and that feeling or need to fill your day and get as much done as possible just isn't there. In fact, the opposite is present. You quickly slip into the 'Hakuna Matata' (No worries), slow pace and feel of the place. An idealic hippy retreat. Less is definitely more. The less you do the more you enjoy and replenish. Relaxing dhow tours to neighbouring islands to sample local dishes and the Lamu culture. Donkey rides to different parts of the island through narrow alley ways, which make up the residential area of Lamu, giving you the feeling of going back in time to a place time forgot.
The archipelago of Lamu is an idyllic setting to relax and recharge. As there are no cars on the island, except for the odd one or two, there are none of the distractions which come with the hustle and bustle of traffic. The faster the pace of life the more the traffic jam. The fact that Lamu has limited cars speaks volumes. There is at least one member of staff available at Si Ajabu 24/7 making your stay more pleasant.
Guests can expect to enjoy excursions to the other islands within the archipelago on comfortable dhow trips. There are donkey rides for the more adventurous and water sports are available on the island too. There are history tours around the island to give a more in depth knowledge of Lamu's history. There is also ample opportunity to experience the local Swahili culture through their foods and living in close proximity to them. All banks, shops and restaurants are within 10 minutes walk of 'Si Ajabu'.
