Places to explore and cycling events to attend in Cape Town for a leisurely two-wheeled adventure.
Experience the fascination of Cape Town on 2 wheels. Fun for the whole family when you pedal through the park, test your skills on mountain bike trails or fulfil your Easy Rider dream and cruise around the coast.
ON YOUR BIKE!
Cape Town is a paradise for those who are passionate about the bicycle. If you are up early, especially on the Atlantic coast roads, you cannot fail to see lines of cyclists pedalling in harmony along super smooth roads, many with a special cycle lane. Not only is the early morning cooler for a ride but there is also less traffic a major safety factor for anyone on 2 wheels.
At the weekend you can meet cycle enthusiasts at a number of coastal coffee shops as they compare notes and ‘re-fuel’ with a coffee or a breakfast.
Get a share of the action in a more leisurely way by hiring out bicycles and cycling along the beachfront. You can ride all the way to the Waterfront or pack a picnic and relax in Green Point Park. There is plenty to do for the kids at both venues, hiring bicycles is very affordable and helmets, baskets and even toddler side cars are also available.
MARCH CYCLE MADNESS
Cape Town celebrated cyclists with Life Cycle Week from 3-12 March.
The week kicked off with Mountain Bike races in the winelands area with the MTB Challenge. There was even something for the kids with JUNIOR Challenge races for 6 different age groups run in the safety of the Cape Town Stadium precinct.
CAPE TOWN CYCLE RACE
The main event is the 40th Cape Town Cycle Race, previously and locally still known as The Argus this is the largest timed cycle race worldwide. Participants have long registered and they are not only international professionals. The Cape Cycle Race is a real Capetonian and family affair with many riders cycling for fun or to raise money for their preferred charities. You will see groups dressed alike and all manner of regalia and headwear. Line the route all along the Atlantic coast line, as the cyclists pedal into Camps Bay they just have a few kilometres to go! Book a stay at Ocean View House on Victoria Road and you will have a front row seat! Remember many roads are closed on the day of the race so pick your spot to watch and get there early. Best of all, get along to the finish and cheer on all who complete this amazing race and take part in the celebrations.
Bitten by the bicycle bug? Then head off to the Bicycle EXPO 8-10th March for the latest and greatest cycle gear and basically everything about cycling.
HOP ON HOP OFF – RENT AN E-BIKE
If not everyone in your party is up to peddling their way around an e-bike is an ideal solution and an easy way to cycle a longer route. Many hotels can organise a hire for you and some even have a few ready to try out. Taking the ocean view road from Bakoven to Hout Bay can be a daunting prospect on a bike but with a little extra motor support it’s a breeze. An e-bike will even take you up to the viewing point at Chapmans Peak and back again. It is best to check with your hire company or hotel just how many hours the battery lasts as you do not want to end up pushing instead of peddling.
Guided township bike tours have been around for a while and are very popular as too are group tours to Cape Point. A vehicle will take the bikes and the riders to the National Park at the tip of Africa and then everyone pedals off at their own pace. Beware of close encounters with
