Near the whale-watching coast of Hermanus, In the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, you'll come across Earth Cottage. It's the ideal self-catering Hermanus breakaway - and it's on the Hermanus Wine Route.
The cottage is tucked away on a smallholding in the valley, and yet it's only 6 km from the beach.
Hermanus town is a stone's throw away. Hermanus self-catering cottages in the valley are sought-after, and few and far between. Earth Cottage, on the other hand, is close to everything.
Earth Cottage is comfortable and cosy. From the master bedroom you'll have sweeping views over the pinot noir vineyards of Hamilton Russell, and our own humble (but generous) veggie garden.
It is the ideal self-catering bridal retreat or stay-over for a couple, or perhaps a family of three. DSTV comes standard. So does free uncapped Internet – on your laptop.
The lounge and dining area looks out over one of our paddocks. Our Arabian horses are almost always in sight.
In the kitchen you'll find a two-burner gas stove, microwave oven, kettle, mini-fridge, washing machine and ample cutlery and crockery.
Towels, linen and braaiwood will be ready for you.
Our water comes from the mountain falls. The brownish colour of the water – in the taps and in the splash pool (which doubles as a fish pond) – is the result of the roots of fynbos plants “dyeing" it.
At Earth Cottage, you'll become intensely aware of nature, even though it is a working smallholding. We live close to the earth here.
The pleasures of the rest of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus, Walker Bay, the lagune and Onrust are just down the road. La Vierge Restaurant is a mere 2 km away.
The entire cottage will be your home during your stay. It is a fully self-contained cottage, with its own access steps from the parking area, which is reached by tarred road. The cottage is separated from the main house by an art studio, so it is private and orientated east while the house faces west.
ACCESSIBILITY: A flight of stairs leads down to the cottage. The steps are uneven in height and width, and could be daunting or challenging for older or infirm vistors and people with special needs. Help is at hand to carry your luggage; just ask. Inside, there's one step from kitchen to lounge, and another from lounge to bathroom. Two steps lead down from the lounge to the bedroom.
The town of Hermanus, once a quaint fishing village, offers Africa's best land-based whale watching. More or less parallel to the coastline, the Hemel-en-Aarde Vallei (meaning Heaven and Earth Valley) is a fertile tract of land where vineyards and orchards offer their abundance. A number of famous wine estates produce and sell their prized wines here in the valley, and many of these establishments have their own restaurants.
EASY TO GET TO
If you're traveling from Cape Town, it's easy: before you reach Hermanus,
about 3 km out of town, there is a large intersection with traffic lights.
On your left, you'll see a Great Wall. That 's the Hemel-en-Aarde Estate..
Across the road there is an Engen garage (petrol station). You need to
turn left, onto the R320, the Hemel-en-Aarde Road, away from the coast. 5
km along the road, you'll see the entrance to Hamilton Russell Vineyards.
About 300 m further, a road marked with a blue concrete sign that reads
"Mountain Rose" right, off the R320.
Take this little road and stay on the tar. Earth Cottage is the first building on your right.
